Samuel’s Gorge Mourvèdre 2022, McLaren Vale, AUD $45

The depths of winter make me turn to the dark side when I reach for a red. Tannin grunt is a must too. This mourvèdre from Samuel’s Gorge is charismatic yet merciless in its delivery.

Notes of spiced plum, mocha and a hint of furniture polish add intrigue from the get-go. The palate is awash with red and black berries and sweet spices. Bitter chocolate tannins frame the core while bringing complexity. This offers the darker side of mourvèdre, embracing the grape for what it is while also bringing life and nuance to the palate. It has loads of appeal for lovers of darker, chewy styles. (Cork)
