Ada Restaurant is at the Convent Hotel in the Auckland suburb of Grey Lynn. It is hard to imagine a more imposing façade. This beautifully restored, solid, two-story Italian-inspired structure is both inviting and imposing. If ghosts do exist it would not surprise me to find them at the Convent Hotel.
It promised to be a good evening. The restaurant staff were helpful while chef Kia Kanuta was not too busy to talk about the components of each dish that he’d prepared for our photographer.
Each flight had been matched with a carefully curated dish that we hoped would show the wines at their best.
Perhaps it was the severity of the architecture, but we had a full complement of guests just 10 minutes after the start time of 6.30pm, which may have set a new promptness record for Auckland.
Twelve wines had been selected from The Real Review’s Top Wineries of New Zealand list. They were to be served in four flights of three. Each flight had been matched with a carefully curated dish that we hoped would show the wines at their best. Three winemakers and a winery owner/founder were on hand to talk about a wine in each of the four brackets.
