Yalumba The Virgilius Viognier 2021, Eden Valley, AUD $50
Viognier is a revered grape in France, the best expressions hailing from the northern Rhône, in particular Condrieu. These wines are saved for celebrating milestones. In Australia we don’t show quite the same reverence, but Yalumba winemaker Louisa Rose has won many hearts with this wine. The cooler 2021 vintage has added ‘chisel’ to this release.
A whirl of aromas—peach, nectarine, honey, almond and spices—leads into a pleasing palate with breadth. It’s intense and dense, yet there’s lightness in its delivery. Flavours of brioche and crème caramel join in, thanks to judicious use of oak. (Screwcap)
