VieVinum is an absolute production. Austrian Wines

As I write this, in mid-May, I’m preparing for a two week trip to Austria for Karakterre, VieVinum and a trip around the Steiermark. I last had the pleasure of attending (and travelling Burgenland) in 2022, just as the world was getting back on planes and festivals were resuming in Europe.

Held every two years, VieVinum it is a mind-boggling event with more than 550 exhibitors, dozens of masterclasses, tastings and side events.

For those who may not be familiar with them, Karakterre is a two-day natural wine fair which is hosted at Esterházy Palace in Eisenstadt (there’s a more recent incarnation of it in New York City as well) with over 200 exhibitors representing Central and Eastern Europe’s vibrant organic, biodynamic and natural wine scene.

The main event, VieVinum, is an absolute production, where The Austrian Wine Marketing Board brings wine professionals together from around the world for the largest showcase of Austrian wine, taking over much of the Hofburg Palace in Central Vienna. Held every two years (except during the COVID lockdowns), it is a mind-boggling event with more than 550 exhibitors, dozens of masterclasses, tastings and side events.

The 2022 event saw the launch of the Austrian Vineyards project where all of the rieds (single vineyards) were surveyed and mapped in what is to my knowledge the most comprehensive vineyard map project yet including grape varieties, soil and climate data, aspect and slope and much more.
