Top Wineries of New Zealand 2024
The Top Wineries New Zealand list has been released for 2024, and 157 wineries have achieved a place this year. More than 3,500 wines were assessed in compiling the list. The Real Review’s Top Wineries algorithm takes each winery’s top wines and looks at their review performance across two years to mitigate any vintage variations due to extreme weather (e.g. the cyclones we experienced in New Zealand last year).
Central Otago is the region which really shone, bringing 36 wineries to the list.
What is always interesting is to see the movement of wineries on the list between two years as some producers catapult up the rankings significantly: In 2024, Fromm, Dog Point, Obsidian, Cloudy Bay and Black Estate all jumped from rankings below 50 into the top 30. Something that leapt out at me right away this year (being a data geek) is the representation of the different wine regions in this list and the high proportion of the Top Wineries with certified organic vineyards.
Keep in mind that any ranking of Top Wineries is unlikely to directly reflect the planted vineyard area of New Zealand, as not every region is focused entirely on the same strata of wine quality or price, and wineries vary in size considerably.
