Wine Classification Feature Week

Wines that rank highly on The Real Review Wine Classification of Australia are usually quite expensive: quality comes at a price. But there are quite a few that are exceptional value for money.

I had a close look at the new entrants and the upgraded wines, and there’s plenty to talk about.

A clear stand-out is Vickery Watervale Riesling—a paltry AUD $24 and six of the 10 vintages reviewed have achieved gold-ribbon scores (at least 95 points).

Moving to the list of wines that were upgraded this year from 1 to 2 Merits, the stand-out is Bowen Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, a scarcely believable AUD $32 a bottle.

Teusner Avatar Grenache Mataro Shiraz is a new entrant with 2 Merits and it costs just AUD $45. Seven of the 10 vintages reviewed achieved gold scores.

Tyrrell’s Belford Semillon is a new entrant with 2 Merits, costs AUD $55 and seven of the 10 vintages achieved gold scores. The price is roughly half the price of Vat 1, but the wine is almost as good most years. Even better value is Tyrrell’s HVD Semillon, which was already in the Classification with 2 Merits, and costs just AUD $45. Both are of course released with the bonus of at least five years’ bottle age.
