Wooing Tree Pinot Gris 2024, Central Otago, NZD $37
Here is one for those with a sweeter tooth. At just under 10 grams per litre of residual sugar, this style is getting less common in New Zealand as more wines tend to be balanced closer to the 4-6 gram range. Despite this, the wine has plenty of concentration and the sweetness is not there to hide anything. When done well, it can be very good!
Subtle nose with crisp apple, flint and sweet herb aromas lead to an elegant though medium-dry palate of sun-dried pear, almond and savoury spice. Very young currently, it has an expansive back palate held in place by tension between acidity and chalky phenolics. Some creamy minerality emerges mid-palate, contrasting the tangy apple candy flavours. Juicy and decadent, made in a sweeter style, it will develop in the mid-term, revealing more savoury complexity with time. (Screwcap)
