Batch Winery Thomas Legacy Left Bank 2023, Waiheke Island, NZD $80
The Thomas Legacy Left Bank is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Cabernet Franc and despite the name (Thomas) it does not come from the Thomas Vineyard, but rather the smaller 2 ha Margaret Reeve Lane Vineyard (planted in 2006). A relatively restrained Waiheke red which is worth discovering.
Charred wood and chocolate with black cherries, blackcurrant, hints of floral perfume and baking spice. Quite an aromatic and pretty expression with mid-weight yet complex flavours on an elegant, tannic architecture. Hints of herb, leaf and stony minerality weave in and out of the palate. A contemplative wine which relies on nuance rather than power or showy wood. Perhaps not for the long haul, but it will provide excellent drinking over the coming decade. (Diam)
