Maybe it’s the cheery conviviality, maybe it’s the face-to-face bartender interaction or maybe it’s just because you often don’t need a reservation—but a coveted bar seat in the lounge of an illustrious restaurant is the new “I’ll have your finest table, please.”
New York’s Penny, one of 2024’s hottest openings, is actually 100% bar seating, with no tables at all. But even if you’ve just stopped by a bar for a quick drink and snack, you’ll find the offerings these days go way beyond olives, nuts, wings and nachos.
