There has been much speculation about the size of this year’s New Zealand grape harvest. New Zealand Winegrowers’ long-awaited survey seems to confirm widespread speculation that the latest harvest is down on the previous year. The total volume of grapes harvested in 2024 was 395,000 tonnes, down 21% on the previous year.
The following table shows the tonnage of grapes harvested per region and the change on the previous vintage.

Hawke’s Bay suffered the biggest loss through the devastating affect of Cyclone Gabrielle. More southerly regions tended to be less affected with Central Otago, Nelson, Wairarapa and Waitaki Valley spared the worst of the storm.
Merlot and riesling experienced the greatest fall in tonnage on the previous year while chardonnay, pinot gris, pinot noir and sauvignon blanc were less affected.
