My first review of a wine from Europe for 2024 is for Cantine Nicosia Grillo Sicilia DOC 2021, Italy, an organic and vegan wine made in Italy from the white Grillo grape. Grillo is a crossing of Catarratto and Moscato di Alessandria (Zibibbo) grapes. According to Wikipedia, “Grillo, also known as Riddu and Rossese bianco, is a white Italian wine grape variety that withstands high temperatures and is widely used in Sicilian winemaking and, in particular, for making Marsala.” This wine can be made full-bodied or light and crisp. My Wine Tasting Notes Cantine Nicosia Grillo Sicilia DOC 2021, Italy (BC $21.99) Cantine Nicosia Grillo Sicilia DOC 2021 with wine in glass
Appearance: A deep clear bright mix of lemon and gold colours.
Nose: Medium-intensity aromas primarily of stone fruits, along with apple and apple skin, but with some time in the glass I also pick up pineapple. With decanting, you can add honey and lime aromas.
Palate: A dry with a smooth, soft, thicker textured mouthfeel. Mouthfilling. Medium-plus flavour intensity. Lower acidity. Stonefruits, peach and apricot, flavours with touches of lime skin and orange blossom. There is also some grape stem bitterness. The wine has a lighter, leaner mouthfeel after decanting. I also picked up some apple flavour after decanting and minerality.
Finish: Medium-plus length with light stone fruit flavours and grape stem bitterness. Add a touch of honey and floral with decanting.
