, Mr Grumpy: over the moon

Bob Campbell MW (AKA Mr Grumpy) The Real Review

Many years ago, on my first trip to Italy, I visited a distinguished winery in the Piedmont called Bersano and was enjoying a comprehensive tasting of their wines.

It is clear that many people believe that the moon’s phases influence how wine tastes.

“I would like you to try our Barbera d’Asti” said my host, “but unfortunately the moon is rising so the wine, which has not yet been bottled, could be cloudy.”

He went on to explain that the gravitational pull during certain phases of the moon expands the volume of wine in tank and barrel and could stir up sediment. That was a reasonable explanation in light of a phenomenon with which most of us are familiar: the tides. Biodynamic producers have an even more intimate relationship with the moon.

It is clear that many people believe that the moon’s phases influence how wine tastes. I found plenty of anecdotal evidence blaming (and sometimes crediting) the moon for its influence on wine quality. I remain slightly sceptical and slightly grumpy.
