Mount Langi Ghiran chief winemaker Adam Louder is serious about quality and about safeguarding the standing of his wines. Hence, he didn’t release a 2020 ‘Langi’ Shiraz because the quality was not good enough. However, it wasn’t bushfire smoke-affected like so many were in 2020, it was simply that the sun failed to shine sufficiently.

But no matter: the 2021 is a ripping wine, and its running-mate, the Mast Shiraz (which comes from a separate block of vines, House Block 4, planted on the property’s coolest, east-facing part) is also exceptional, perhaps the best Mast Shiraz produced to date.

I suggested to Adam that the ’21 Langi was not as peppery as some vintages, and he replied that the 2021 had the most rotundone of any vintage since 1999, when the Australia Wine Research Institute began recording the rotundone levels. Mount Langi Ghiran is regarded as the highest rotundone vineyard in Australia, rotundone being the compound that gives shiraz its peppery note. However, we agreed that as time has passed, the Mount Langi Ghiran shirazes have become richer and more layered, so that the peppery character is not as obvious: it’s now just part of a rich canvas of aromas that make up an increasingly complex red wine.
