Lauren Hansen. Penley Estate Wines

Lauren Hansen is the dux of the 2024 Len Evans Tutorial. Lauren is the winemaker at Penley Estate, Coonawarra.

Each year 12 wine people are chosen to attend the tutorial in the Hunter Valley, which has been running for 22 years.

This is great news for Coonawarra, which needs all the help it can get these days, what with cabernet sauvignon being in a slump worldwide and Coonawarra seemingly less able to get its message out than its biggest competitor, Margaret River.

Samantha Connew, one of the large cast of tutors this year, commented:

“Lauren’s performance across the week was remarkably consistent as has been par for the course for all LET previous duxes. She was in the top three scholars in all of the judging brackets, using her golds sparingly but precisely. Her language when talking about the wines was concise and succinct, focusing on all of the wine’s aspects that needed to be covered. In addition, she was one of the top two performers in the written exercise.”

Lauren’s CV includes working vintages in Bordeaux, New Zealand and Austria and, in Australia, working stints with Balnaves, Brokenwood and Bannockburn Vineyards. She previously distinguished herself by duxing the viticulture and oenology degree course at the University of Adelaide in 2012.

Lauren’s prize is a business class trip to Europe on Singapore Airlines to visit some of the greatest wine producers of Europe.
