, Largest and most expensive wine collection to be auctioned

Sotheby’s is about to auction 25,000 bottles worth an estimated USD $50 million and reported by Oscar Holland of CNN to be from a private cellar that currently holds more wine than any one individual could ever hope to drink in a lifetime.

The wines that Chen is planning to auction through Sotheby’s will be offered over five sales spread across one year.

The owner of this Aladdin’s cave of vinous goodies is Taiwanese billionaire Pierre Chen, rated by Forbes as Taiwan’s 10th and the world’s 515th richest person with an estimated fortune of USD $5.5 billion.

Chen is founder and chair of electronics giant Yageo Corporation. He is an art collector and will soon open his first restaurant in Paris, Le Restaurant Blanc, which will be supplied with wines from his collection. In 2015 Chen acquired a parcel of land in Burgundy and produces his own wine in the Grand Cru Musigny appellation.

According to the CNN report, Chen began collecting wines from Bordeaux in the 1970s but now favours the wines of Burgundy. Red burgundies, particularly from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti’s La Tâche vineyard, account for the most valuable lots on offer. They include two methuselahs (six litres) from 1985 that are valued at between USD $120,000 and USD $190,000 each.
