Someone I’ve known for many years and who I’ve doubted has any sense of humour at all, declared to a group of mates that they thought they had a good sense of humour.

It’s a cliché that everybody’s self-image is wrong. We think we know how others perceive us, but we’re incorrect.

If you’ve ever watched the TV program by Jerry Seinfeld called Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee you’ll know that even comedians are not all funny all the time.

Some of us think we’re funny and we’re not. I’m sure everyone has attended a dinner party where someone persists in telling jokes that aren’t funny. The joke teller is the only one who thinks he’s funny, and it’s usually a ‘he’.

So, dear old Doug Mulray died recently. The erstwhile radio announcer was a true comic. Not everybody can be funny all the time—a true comedian, who is funny without trying. They open their mouth and something droll always comes out.

It would be wonderful if we could all be like that, but the truth is, sadly, we aren’t.
