Crittenden Estate Macvin Savagnin NV, Mornington Peninsula, AUD $95
(Bottling #5) The continuous learning curious winemakers undertake is impressive. Roly Crittenden is a thinker and a lover of Jura, where this style of wine originated. Macvin #5 is made from a portion of flor-aged savagnin sweetened with fresh grape juice from the current vintage and then fortified to amp up the alcohol and stop fermentation. If this is your first experience of a Macvin, it sets a high bar.
Sourdough, almond, fresh leather and button mushrooms make for an alluring mix on the nose. The palate’s sweetness is beautifully aligned with acidity and chewy phenolics, providing structure and freshness. Complex aged material is tempered by youthful lightness. It’s beautifully balanced and feels quite light on its feet despite the high alcohol. What a wine! One to make you think as well as enjoy. (Diam)
