Havilah Wines Cabernet Franc 2022, Tasmania, AUD $45

Cabernet has always had a hard time ripening in the cooler climes of Tassie. As cab franc ripens earlier this seems to be a good fit. This one was made by Ricky Evans of Two Tonne Tasmania (who also makes some lovely pinots) for the local wine bar he also runs. I haven’t been, but it’s on my Tassie to-do list.

Spiced black plums and wafts of licorice lead into a palate of violets and blueberries. Some airing wakes the wine up. It’s a lovely cabernet franc with just the right flesh-to-structure ratio. It’s not cheap, but save it for a special night in. (Cork)
