Ah yes, here we are at the pointy end of the year when everything seems to go entirely mad in the restaurant game. Melbourne Cup is behind us and there’s just a few chaotic weeks of people celebrating with clients, work colleagues, family and friends.
Here’s a brief list of things as a customer we will love you for, and when we are loving you it means we are looking after you just a little bit more.
Now don’t get me wrong, as a Sydney CBD restaurateur these are my most favoured weeks because once we cross into January, the quietest weeks of the entire year are upon us, so everyone in the game is trying to make as much hay while the sun shines. That is even more critical to every business after the past few years and a complex 2023 with cost of living leaping out of the barriers like Black Caviar!
For those that work in hospitality, it’s a strange time of year. Yes, it really does help the bank balance. There’s no shortage of shifts, extra hours and overtime but it is also significantly more stressful. Long shifts, extra double shifts and so on wear and tear on the body plus missing the celebrations that everyone else is having has its own impact. Even if we’ve been doing it for many years, missing out on some of those things still stings.
