Chaffey Bros did very well at the recent Decanter World Wine Awards, winning a Best in Show platinum medal, a gold medal and a silver for its three entries.
Their wines are Eden Valley predominant, and their shirazes display a spicy elegance that is typical Eden Valley.
As I mentioned in my round-up article of the Decanter judging, an unfortunate preponderance of heavily oaked Australian shirazes were exhibited, but the Chaffey wines are not offenders of this crime. On board as winemaker since 2020 vintage is Huon Fechner, who joined Daniel Chaffey Hartwig and his brother-in-law Theo Engela (the ‘Chaffey brothers’). They all have an input into the winemaking but Fechner is the trained and experienced winemaker. It’s a happy fit as Fechner’s family owns a major vineyard source for Chaffey Bros.
The 2021 Elijah Shiraz (gold) is from that vineyard, as is the 2019 Tripelpunkt Riesling, which won a strong a silver medal at DWWA and a strong silver-ribbon score from me. The third wine, 2021 Evangeline Syrah, which won a Best In Show award at DWWA, is from a vineyard at Springton, also in the Eden Valley.
