Ben Cane has extended the already outstanding range of wines since he and his partner took over Duke’s Vineyard at Porongurup in the WA Great Southern.
The new releases add a super-dooper riesling on top of the famous Magpie Hill Reserve, and a superb Margaret River chardonnay (AUD $62), among other things. There’s also a cheaper AUD $38 WA chardonnay named M2. These are the first chardonnays ever issued under the Duke’s Vineyard label.

While the Margaret River chardonnay is a deadly serious wine, the M2 “a bit more of a juicy delicious number ready for immediate gratification,” says Cane.
The super riesling is named K2 and is a 2022 vintage, released a year later than the other rieslings—the Magpie Hill Reserve and the Single Vineyard Riesling. All three are from the estate vineyard at Porongurup.

This is a blend of grapes from old and young blocks of vines, partly barrel fermented (in seasoned oak) and aged on lees, and deliberately made in a more textural style. It was an experimental wine that turned out so well it immediately leap-frogged to the top of the list. 0.45 g/l residual sugar, 8.2 g/l total acidity and 11.8% alcohol.
