Forager winemaker and owner Dom Maxwell in the vineyard. Forager Wines

Forager is the love-child of Dom Maxwell, founding winemaker of Greystone in Waipara. 2022 is the tenth release of Forager Pinot Noir. The wine was made from grapes grown in Amuri limestone in Waiau, a sub-region of North Canterbury that is a 40-minute drive north of Waipara. The vineyard, Isolated Hill, is owned by the Black family.

A major point of difference between Forager’s vineyard practices and those of others in their region is allowing the fermentation to take place among the vines that produced their wine.

Amuri limestone is millions of years old. It allows the uptake of natural nutrients and minerals into the grapevine phloem, that is perfect for chardonnay and pinot noir.

A major point of difference between Forager’s vineyard practices and those of others in their region is allowing the fermentation to take place among the vines that produced their wine. Forager pioneered this technique in New Zealand to create a stronger link between wine and place. By not using temperature control during fermentation they expose the wine to the seasonal weather influence, increasing the strength of its signature and turning up the volume of place.

Fermented in the vineyard that produced the grapes for a truly authentic statement of place, this wine is as remarkable as it is delicious. Dark cherry, fresh herb, hedgerow and restrained spicy oak flavours.
