Zephyr Gewürztraminer 2022, Marlborough, NZD $28
Distinctive and also niche in taste at the same time, gewürztraminer is an underrated, yet well-known variety which is often made slightly sweet to bring its inherently high alcohol potential into balance. In most styles of wine, drier has been the trend for high quality examples, but there is something about gewürztraminer which lends itself to being bottled with a sliver of residual sugar, enhancing its innate exoticism and decadence. Ben Glover’s family vineyard in Dillon’s Point makes a fantastically hedonistic representation of this variety and at this price, it’s a steal.
Light gold. A grown-up gewürztraminer with clearly identifiable varietal flavours – from the spicy ginger and rose water on the nose to its savoury-edged yet chewy palate full of Turkish Delight and rose perfume which carries right through to the honeyed medium-dry finish. It avoids being sweet somehow despite actually harbouring noticeable sugar. More spicy and textured than perfumed, this will be fantastic with food. (Screwcap)
