Murdoch Hill The Tilbury Chardonnay 2022, Adelaide Hills, AUD $53

The Downer family’s vineyard, though planted in 1998, is on land bought by winemaker Michael Downer’s grandfather in 1939. The artisan series wines are each named after a vintage horse-drawn carriage, as grandfather Downer collected them.

This opens with a smoky toasty bouquet that evokes classy oak and a little reduction. The palate is delicate, refined, understated and quite intense, with a clean dry and appetising follow-thorough. Good focus and it has room to grow with a little more time in bottle. (Screwcap)
