The winery was later leased by the then 19-year old Tom McDonald who bought it outright a decade later. By the 1960s Tom, assisted by Montpellier-trained Denis Kasza, pioneered quality viticulture in New Zealand.
In 1989 the winery was purchased by Montana Wines who, with the help of Bordeaux-based Domaines Cordier, invested heavily in the development of quality red wine production using Bordeaux grape varieties.
In 1991 the first wine was produced under the Church Road label. Today there is a pecking order of both red and white wines starting with the entry level Estate wines, then moving up to Grand Reserve, Single Vineyard (Church Road 1) and finally the flagship label, Tom.
