Santa & D’Sas …ish Dolcetto 2019, King Valley, AUD $30

Matthew Di Sciascio and Andrew Santarossa share an Italian cultural heritage, so no surprise that they specialise in Italian styles, made from grapes sourced from five Victorian regions.

Deep, bold, youthful red-purple colour, lashings of cedary oak overlying the dark berry/mulberry fruit aromas, the palate very drying and sinewy with quite emery-like tannins. Bitter herbs and sarsaparilla. A tightly composed and almost forbidding wine by itself, but it’s made to partner hearty food. Below the tannin is an almost-hidden fruit sweetness, the overall impression a bit discordant solo, but it all works well with the right food. (Screwcap)
