House of Arras Chief Winemaker Ed Carr. House of Arras

Champagne and Sparkling Feature Week

This year’s release of 2008 Arras E.J. Carr Late Disgorged Vintage Chardonnay Pinot Noir in magnum is equal to the highest scoring Australian sparkling wines I have ever tasted. At 98 points, it ranks with several other Arras wines, the 2007, 2001 and 1998 Late Disgorged and the 2005 Museum Blanc de Blancs. It is an exquisite sparkling wine. Comparisons are odious, but it would stand tall beside just about anything from Champagne.

The 2024 House of Arras Collection, scheduled for release in late October, is a stunning line-up. It caps a year of critical and show success for Arras.

It’s been a big year for the House of Arras, the luxury Tasmanian sparkling wine brand which is now owned by DMG Fine Wines, which also owns the Handpicked Wines brand, vineyards and winery. When it purchased Arras it also acquired the Bay of Fires winery and vineyards in northern Tasmania. Suddenly, Australia’s most acclaimed and most awarded fizz-maker found himself working for a different boss. That boss is DMG’s owner, Chinese Australian William Dong. Dong has big plans for Arras, including the export market, increasing production, and more large-format bottles. DMG owns about 50ha of vineyards in Tasmania now.

We’ve known for many years that Arras wines are outstanding. The rest of the world just needs to be made aware of them.
