2021 completed a hat trick of great Hawke’s Bay vintages. According to Warren Gibson, Trinity Hill’s chief winemaker, 2021 is one of Hawke’s Bay’s greatest syrah vintages, particularly on the Gimblett Gravels subregion.

“2021 was a great vintage and quite unique. It produced powerful syrah with lots of colour and good natural acidity.” – Warren Gibson

It was a dry, sunny season, not particularly hot with only a few days exceeding 30°C. Despite the lack of heat it was an early vintage.

“Syrah generally had high alcohols and maintained good acidity levels with pronounced florals,” said Gibson.

“If I had to compare it with other vintages, I’d say it was a bit like the 2004 and 2010 years although they were both later than 2021. Chardonnay was also a high performer in 2021. 2021 was a great vintage and quite unique. It produced powerful syrah with lots of colour and good natural acidity.”
