The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg – 1000sq Miles of 170 Nationalities

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg marked number 55 on my world map of countries visited. It was a short and sweet visit over a couple of days, but nonetheless a delightful and memorable experience.

Luxembourg is strategically located in the heart of Europe, surrounded by Belgium, France and Germany. With only 626,000 inhabitants, of which 47 percent are foreign, it is a small country with a total land area of 2,590 Km2 (1,000 sq. miles), mostly rural, blessed with dense forests, and natural parks. The capital is Luxembourg City, famous for its medieval old town, which rests over steep cliffs providing magnificent views. Over 170 different nationalities live in Luxembourg forming an eclectic array of cultures, gastronomy, art, leisure, and lifestyle.

Occupied twice by Germany during both World Wars, Luxembourg’s history is intertwined with its powerful neighbors. Some of the fundamental aspects of these historical connections are clearly apparent via the spoken languages and eclectic cuisine; French and German are widely spoken alongside Luxembourgish.

Luxembourg Cuisine can be described as a combination of German hearty dishes topped

with perfect French finesse.

One of my favorite gastronomic experiences in the city was at Um Plateau. This lively bar is one of the most delightful places I’ve been to; it has a cozy, elegant and charming lounge ambience, amazing cocktails, superb service and seasonal, authentic flavors capturing timeless cuisine!
