Xanadu Cabernet Sauvignon 2022, Margaret River, AUD $45

Xanadu is one of the elders of the Margaret River region, having its origins in the late 1970s when a vineyard was first planted by founder Dr John Lagan. Via some industry twists and turns, the ‘vintrepreneurial’ Rathbone family acquired Xanadu in 2005 and over the last two decades, the brand and quality have gone from strength to strength.

This benchmark Margaret River cab is a blend of cabernet sauvignon (88%), malbec (8%) and petit verdot (4%) which was sourced from the subregions of Wilyabrup (40%), Yallingup (16%), Wallcliffe (40%) and Treeton (4%). The wine was matured for 14 months in French oak (40% new barriques) before the blend was assembled, prior to bottling.

Dark red, youthful and bright in the glass. Classic cabernet aromas of cassis, bramble, dried herbs, cedar, tobacco, anise and bayleaf. Tightly bound, concentrated and pure in flavour. There’s lashings of blackberry, dark cherry, briar and cedar. The tannins are firm, seriously shaped and drying and the acidity delivers plenty of zip. Archetypal Margaret River cabernet, built for the long haul. (Screwcap)
