Mitchell Watervale Riesling 2024, Clare Valley, AUD $28
Mitchell has been a name synonymous with benchmark Clare Valley riesling for as long as I can remember and indeed they have championed the sub-region of Watervale from the get-go. The first release was in 1977 and I doubt little has changed in the vinification since then. This is archetypal Watervale riesling: tightly coiled, with a pure and precise drive of citrus and rapier-like acidity that cracks and snaps.
Lashings of lime, lemon, talc and a slaty minerality on the nose. Fresh, crunchy, lively and citrus driven on the palate. There’s some shapely phenolic grip on the finish and the acidity has real presence and precision. (Screwcap)
