, Why Some Sustainability-Minded Wineries Are Turning to Propane

Environmentally-conscious companies around the globe are constantly looking for ways to lower their carbon footprints. Suburban Propane, interestingly, is among them. It says it’s committed to a future focused on clean energy and clear air, dedicated to finding the long-term solutions necessary for decarbonization, a.k.a. significantly reducing carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.

One type of business that Suburban Propane believes is prime to help out? Wineries.

According to propane experts, the gas can potentially lower overall carbon intensity, thanks to its versatility and what Suburban Propane calls clean-burning qualities. With recent technological advancements in the production of propane created from renewable sources, many believe the gas could in fact play a major role in the shift toward carbon neutrality. 

It’s a shift from the way many consumers view propane. Wine Enthusiast sat down with Michael Stivala, President of Suburban Propane, to talk all things renewable energy, including the company’s Go Green initiatives, strategic collaborations and more.  

Tell us a bit about Suburban Propane’s latest initiative, Go Green.

With Go Green, we realized that we had to advocate and get the word out about how good propane actually is for the environment. Propane is totally misunderstood. It meets the standards set by the federal Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA) for reducing acid rain and controlling air pollution in urban areas—and additionally, CAAA deems propane as one of the solutions to a cleaner, healthier environment. It doesn’t contaminate soil or groundwater due to its rapid vaporization,
