In other words, these are truly excellent examples of Spätlese, or late harvest, Riesling.
German wine classifications can be a bit confusing but the Spätlese on the label indicates this is a late harvest wine from fully ripe grapes. This does not necessarily mean that these are sweet wines, it just means that the grapes were fully ripe when picked and therefore have a high level of sugar in them at harvest.
That said, today’s wines are definitely on the sweet side with a good amount of residual sugar (59.8 g/L for the 2016 and 51.2 g/L for the 2019), but they are also beautifully balanced by plenty of refreshing acidity so that they don’t come off
