Deep, dark and delicious but also highly quaffable, the BULK BUY rated The Messenger Touriga Nacional from Douro, Portugal is today’s Insider Deal.
It’s back by popular demand!
If you’ve been reading Reverse Wine Snob for long, then you know we often tout Portugal as a great place to find value. Those same grape varieties that make up the excellent Port wines found there also make some truly magnificent red wines.
And while we often specifically point to the value in Portuguese red blends, today we’re extremely excited to bring you a single varietal Touriga Nacional, the country’s most noble grape — and most expensive in single varietal form.
Bold, dark and tannic, this variety, which has great aging potential, normally retails for well more than today’s offer price.
Even better, the example we have today comes from the fine folks at Art + Farm wines, who you may remember from their spectacular Adelaide Hills Cabernet Sauvignon.
Here’s the genesis of today’s wine which comes from the famed Douro region of Portugal:
As a child growing up in Australia, Rob would accompany his dad to one of the local wineries where they would ‘go around the back’ and find a designated barrel of Port wine with a unique chalk mark. Once the barrel was identified they siphoned the Port into their 5-gallon container. Doing this required sticking a hose in the barrel, sucking on it until the Port started flowing, and then jamming the hose
