Top Wineries of Australia 2024 Clemens Hill – Coal River Valley, Tasmania

This brand has been around for a while and I’ve been tasting the wines for years but the quality just keeps rising and rising. The 2022 Aurelia and Aurelia Tashinga chardonnays are special, but so are the ’22 Aurelia and Aurelia Tashinga pinot noirs. Winemaker is the accomplished Penny Jones, at Bay of Fires.

Gaffy & Neal – Mornington Peninsula

Doug Neal made his name as winemaker at Geelong’s Paradise IV, which is no more. Now he makes wine in the Macedon Ranges and Mornington, the last in cahoots with Darrin Gaffy of Principia. The result is two gorgeous 2022 chardonnay.

Granjoux – Beechworth

A new producer making tiny quantities of stunning chardonnay and shiraz from a re-planted walled site in Beechworth that had a previous life as a vineyard in the 19th century. Stunning inaugural shiraz and chardonnay are 2021 vintage.

Hatch – Barossa

Spending most of his long career making Wolf Blass wines has not dimmed Chris Hatcher’s love of wine and winemaking. His 2022 shirazes from Barossa and McLaren Vale are excellent, as are his 2023 rieslings from Clare and Eden Valleys.

Ossa– Tasmania

This is a new brand based on a nascent vineyard which is still settling its roots into the soil at Swansea, on Tassie’s East Coast.
